常福寺は、建長寺の末寺で、山号は本鏡山、正式には「本鏡山常福寺」と申します。
今より約700年まえ、鎌倉時代末期に建立された由緒ある寺院で、ご本尊は釈迦如来様です。霊峰、雨降山を望む緑豊かな地に佇み、境内には400年を超える古木がそびえ悠久の時を感じさせます。
開山様は鎌倉建長寺の35代管長、本覚了堂禅師（正安3年＝1301年没）、開基は菅原長員です。正和5年、文章博士などを務めた菅原長員が、その祖父菅原長貞の供養のため、 鎌倉建長寺より本覚了堂禅師を招き開山されたものです。
その後、一時衰微したものを信濃の国出身の玉叟珍（栄禄6年＝1563年没）が中興したと伝えられています。
開山以来代々知識人として知られた菅原氏と縁が深く、天正12年（1584年）の北条氏直の版物状や、 鎌倉仏師として知られる後藤四郎兵衛藤原義貴の作による地蔵菩薩立像などが残されています。
江戸時代には寺子屋も開かれ、後には｢新戸学校｣も開かれるなど、当地の学問の中核地であったようです。現在では、寺子屋や坐禅会、音楽会など多くの活動がなされ、生きている私達が寺と接する機会を大切にしています。
Jofukuji Temple is a branch temple of Kenchoji, and its mountain name is Honkyozan. Formally, it is known as “Honkyozan Jofukuji.”
Founded approximately 700 years ago in the late Kamakura period. Its principal deity is Shakyamuni Buddha.
During the Edo period, a temple school (terakoya) was established here, and later the “Shindo School” was also opened, making the temple a center of learning in the region.
Today, Jofukuji continues to serve as a place of connection, offering activities such as temple education programs, Zen meditation sessions, and musical events, providing opportunities for people to engage with the temple in meaningful ways.
